Best and Worst Aspects of Internet (for Final Exam, Blog Post Section No.3)

Internet is a great invention in human-history. It is even called as a revolution and has been giving amazing impacts in the world since it was born. Economical system and communication style have been reshaped while the expansion of Internet. The brightest side of Internet is that it enables people to have easy and fast, even real time, global communication, but at the same time, the great advantage causes a serious disparity between people who can use Internet and who can't.

The best aspect of Internet is that it is a tool of world wide communication. Wikipedia defines the Internet as "The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide"(Wikipedia). The aspect creates a new style of people's communication because distance becomes meaningless on the Internet. For example, "It is now entirely possible for someone in rural America to carry on conversations with people from Moscow, Paris and Jakarta, all at the same time" (eHow.com). In this great development of communication style, social networking sites work crucial roles while millions of users access to these sites from many countries. Businesses also got great advantages. Internet gives businesses a  new place for marketing and advertising. For instance, "Creating a website benefits businesses because people can market their products and services without using traditional marketing techniques such as fliers, mailings and newspaper ads" (eHow.com). Internet also enables companies to have large and world wide customers data bases on the Internet, and it also enables to reduce office supplies because companies don't have to pay for expensive international mails (eHow.com). The global communication is the best advantage and aspect of Internet.

The worst aspect of Internet is digital divide, basically caused by disparity between rich and poor. Digital Divide Institute defines the term, digital divide, as "the gap between those who can benefit from digital technology and those who cannot" (Digital Divide Institute). Even though the Internet have been spread widely, it doesn't mean all people have an access to Internet. Here's a statistic of Internet users in the world. It shows 30% of people can use Internet and 70% of people can't in 2011. This map (treehugger.com) show which countries uses internet a lot more visually. It is obvious that developed countries dominate the Internet share. Thus the majority of 30% people who use the Internet live in developed countries. It enlarges the gap between rich and poor more and more. Some groups are now working hard to close the digital divide by inventing Solar WiFi system, sending people with technical skills and providing low costs PC (treehugger.com). The biggest dark side, digital divide, will remain as the worst aspect of Internet until everyone all over the world get their access to the global communication.

The best aspect of Internet is that it enables people communicate globally, and the worst aspect is the digital divide. Just because the advantage is so big, the disadvantage is surprisingly big as well. The powerful revolution of Internet have made a light side and a dark side at the same time.

A change of emotion

A change of emotion (in two panels)!

This will be my last work of ds106 assignment.
The description says...
Write and illustrate (photograph, sketch, video sample, etc) a two panel story that describes a change of emotion.
Here's what I did!
This is a picture that I took a year ago at a game center in Tokyo.
I tried to express the change of emotion through the change of colors. I don't know if it works but I hope it does!

I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0.

Colorize your world

colorize your world!

This is my fourth work of ds106 assignment.
All I needed to do was just pick up a picture and change the colors. I couldn't find any good one but this one. Such a wonderful picture that I took years ago!

Then I changed the colors  into sepia tone.

I learned that sepia makes everything cool.

~How I made it~
Put sepia effect on the picture.

I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0.

Where did you come from?!

Wait, where'd that guy come from?!

I chose the assignment for my third ds106 work.
The description says...
Photoshop someone(s) (or something(s)) into a picture that isn't supposed to be there.
OK. Here is "someone".

Me at school. And here's something.

Then result!
Find me :)
I used Adobe I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0.

My Spubble

Your Very Own Spubble!

Here's second work of ds106 assignment.
It was not very difficult but I enjoyed a lot! Thank you Jim Groom.

The Darth Vader guy is me. And she is my wonderfully beautiful girlfriend.

This is how TUJ students escape from their reality.

~How I made it~
Put spubble. That's all!

I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0.

Mac? Windows? Which is safer??

AVG 9.0 Free prevented the malware from being ran
Malware. I love my girlfriend but I can't love Malware. Everybody hates them. We learned about them in class. They are such big threats for many computer users. I've suffered from them several times, too. I wish we didn't have any Malwares on the internet and thus we didn't have to pay for any expensive anti-malware software!

By the way, there's a computer OS that repeatedly claims "I'm strong! You're safe!". Do you know? Click this link and check it out. Yes. Mac OS! Watch the video below, an advertisement by Apple, which promotes its anti-Malware feature. I'm a Windows user. Actually, majority of computer users use Windows (statistics here!). Then Mac OS is more secure than Windows OS? Isn't it wonderful if the advertisement is really true!? Hey everyone! Throw your Windows out of a window! Now Malwares. Go extinct!  Wait... I wonder.... is it really true??

I found a web page written about Malwares threatening Mac OS (link here!). OMG! Malwares targeting on Mac do exist!
It seems Mac is safer than windows but not totally safe. Also, here's shocking quote from another page (link here!).
The general consensus among security researchers is that there's nothing about the Mac that makes it inherently more secure than Windows -- indeed, the Mac platform has been easily penetrated in the Pwn2Own hacking contest in years past. But Windows has always been a juicier target for malicious hackers because it has much larger market share than the Mac.
Therefore, conclusion about this question might be that OS is safer when less people use it because less Malwares target at it!

OK. It seems you can't totally escape from threats of Malware. I'll keep using Windows anyway. I'm a nice, Eco-friendly guy. But everyone, don't stop throwing your Windows out of a Window. Please make it less popular and I can use my computer more safely.

Question for the final exam
The first computer viruses were designed to cause damages. True or False?

Summary/Response to Timmmmyboy

The Self Portrait ArtistMichael Branson Smith had a lecture, "We Are All Artists", in his blog for ds106. What he claims all about is that anyone can be artist. It doesn't matter if they're not art major students.
We are all kinds of artists.
We just don't see that way.
In his opinion, creativity is not what we get when we're born but something you can learn, and ds106 is a good place that you can be inspired by much of creativity and grow your own creativity.

I agree with his idea. I hope I can be an artist somehow ! And his lecture made me reconsider about the importance of social media. I mean, social media gives people places to show their creativity. This is really important I think. Ds106 is a perfect example. People post their work on ds106 and it's viewed by people all over the world. Same in YouTube, flickr, etc. These platforms and its convenience highly encourage people to be artists I can tell !

10/13 - Midterm Blog Post !

OK, I choose "video" as the topic of this blog post!

In the ds106, I found an assignment in video category, that is "How I Made It".
This assignment basically wants student to edit so called "Tutorial video" that teach
how you can create certain type of art, video, etc. This assignment reminded me a
popular tutorial video that is teach how you can shoot Kamehameha in your video!
Check the video here!

In the last post, I talked about fan films on YouTube and then I introduced
a Kamehameha video for an example. That one actually followed this movie.
This tutorial video got almost 3 million accesses so far, definitely one of the most
popular tutorial video on YouTube. Because of its popularity, you see hundreds of
Kamehameha clips there. Check this blog that lists up several Kamehameha videos
on YouTube!

Kamehameha is from Dragon Ball, famous blast attack in the anime. Since the
anime have been watched in many countries. There are million of DB fans all over
the world. This is a quote from a blog.
"It was one of the first cartoons that done Japanese Anime renouned in the Western World and non-stop the doorway to the entire world"(by caro).
Especially, Kamehameha is so popular that Kamehameha Contest was once held at
Armageddon Pop Culture Expo in New Zealand. (Check this blog explaining about the event!)
This popularity and great tutorial video create helped many Kamehameha shooters upload
their videos on the Internet! This is a good example that tutorial video can be so influential
to other people. It even can create such a interesting and big wave!

New Stream of POP Culture: Fan Films

Welcome back to my Blog!
I belong to the group of Fans 2 in my class, so I would like to introduce a interesting new stream of POP culture driven by fans on social media. That's FAN FILMS!
The idea of the fan film – an amateur, not-for-profit work inspired by a commercial movie, TV show or comic book – (Jane Graham) (Link here!)
Watch this one for example. ("Re : dbz kamehameha tutorial after effects" by Mocarg)

You see tons of fan films like this if you surf YouTube. What encouraged fans to make these movies?

(1) Price of high quality PC and editing software.

Film editing used to need big and expensive machines and studio.
Not long ago, video editing was possible only with the help of expensive equipment and a substantial amount of training (infoweblinks.com)
So film editing was only for Professional people and you needed to be rich to make fan films for your hobby.

How about now? Many good quality PC costs  less than 1000$ (Check here!). Movie editing software costs about 150$-1000$ (Source!). Moreover, some software like Windows Movie Maker cost 0$! These amazing price change enabled fans to edit own fan films for their hobby today.

(2) YouTube and other movie sharing plat forms.

They got equipments for their jobs. Great! Then what they got next is space that they can share their movies to other people. YouTube and other movie sharing plat forms have been acting a big role for this part. Fans upload their fan films, evaluate each others. This is a new wave of POP culture started by fans on social media.

Because of these reasons, fan films became so popular and it is no longer just a hobby of fans.
If you have any favorite movie, TV show, anime, comic, etc, go to YouTube. You see some fan-made videos and it makes you smile.

More examples ! (StarWars)

POP CULTURE

I'm sure that you know I am her boyfriend but do you know what is Pop culture?
Me? I say..... yes... but, well... I think I can't define it correctly. So I google now.

OK. According to this site, Pop culture is simply what large number of people are interested in. That can be movie, music, comic, game.... Wow so simple!

Then, in Japan, what is POP now? OK, let me google the word "pop culture in Japan" and see the very first link on the list! カチャカチャカチャ

There you go. Oh wow! "Japan Pop Culture Festival 2011" !? This might be a good one to get the answer! Why don't I click it??

 I love Japaaaaan!!(*´ロ`)
It seems Anime is the heart of Japanese pop culture now.
"Funny country" (TUJ student). I can't leave here.

Here is a example of social media usage in pop culture. Nico Nico Douga, one of the famous video sharing platform in Japan, has official anime channel. (http://ch.nicovideo.jp/menu/anime) Many of them are free. Amazing!

The Golden Age of Flash Animation

Since we have learned about history of Internet in class, I would like to introduce some recent internet history in Japan. It's around 2001-2005. Some Japanese internet users call it as "The golden age of Flash animation". My school days....

Flash is a type of active animation which we can put on web site. It is provided by Adobe and it owns original programing language, called Action Script, so you can put some buttons in the animation, you can make game with it, well... it is not really "animation" all the time . And the most amazing thing about this flash is its file size. One Flash animation is about 500 kb for 5 minutes including pictures and sounds.
Here you can see history of Flash.

Around 2001-2005, DSL was the major internet line which people use at their home in Japan. At that time, movie file is too heavy to deal with in internet and the Flash animation was popular instead.

These are famous Flash animations which were made in the Golden age. I can still recall my school days that My friends and I watched these in computer room in my junior high school........ in class.

Around 2004, FTTH was becoming popular and the number of subscribers were booming. Some details are here! We got the high speed Internet and came to be able to enjoy movies in Internet.

In 2005, YouTube was founded. (History of YouTube) Next year, 2006, another popular video sharing platform in Japan, Nico Nico Douga, was founded. (About Nico Nico Douga) As these platforms became so popular, the popularity of Flash animation fell down.

Flash was taken place by YouTube and Nico Nico now, but Flash is still active in Internet because of its Action Script and file size.

The Golden Age is my school days. I really miss those days. But I love YouTube and Nico Nico Douga, too. If you have free time tonight, check my YouTube channel. You can tell how I'm happy to be in the Golden age of YouTube! (http://www.youtube.com/user/YukiKomuro)

Yes, this blog is an advertisement. Thank you I'm happy.
